Spice
Spice is from “Dune” by Frank Herbert. Known fully as Spice Melange this drug has been seen in many forms but we are mixing it up in liquid form. (I’m not skilled enough for serving gas to my guests aka my roommate) For the spice cocktail we choose a play on an old fashioned brown sugar cinnamon syrup. Careful not to have too many we don’t want any water of life to float out of your eyes.
Brown Sugar Cinnamon Simple Syrup (BSC simple)
- Equal Measures Brown Sugar and water
- 3 Cinnamon Sticks
I used ½ cup of brown sugar and water. Heat the brown sugar in water with cinnamon sticks over medium heat until sugar is fully dissolved. Leave the cinnamon sticks in syrup for 30 minutes. Then strain into a bottle (I used an old salad dressing bottle).
Spice Cocktail
- ½ to ¾ ounce Brown Sugar Cinnamon Simple syrup (depending on how sweet you want it i prefer ½)
- 2 dashes Angostura Bitters
- Orange peel
- 2 ounces whiskey
- Ice
Cinnamon Brown Sugar Rim
- ½ teaspoon brown sugar
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Wipe the rim of an old-fashioned glass with the orange peel then dip in the cinnamon sugar.
Combine BSC simple and bitters fill glass half way with ice and stir.
Add enough ice to fill the glass and squeeze the orange peel over the glass to extract the oil. Add whiskey. Stir until chilled. Typically around 10-12 stirs does the trick. I used a spicy bourbon whiskey that would go well with the cinnamon. I made these for Mom and Dad. Mom does not like whiskey so i made hers with Amaretto. She loved it! It would also work with apple cider for the kids in your life.
