WHY:
I picked this book because I’ve read and re-read the series over and over again. My husband introduced me to the series back when we first started dating. It took me a few tries to get into it, but I finally quit being stubborn and gave it an actual chance. I ended up finishing the series before my husband!!! The characters and storytelling are amazing! I absolutely love them and get completely engrossed in the world of Richard Rahl. BIG FAN OVER HERE.
Summary of the book:
Richard Cypher must find three magic boxes mentioned in a secret book of his father’s. If he does not, the evil lord Darken Rahl will gain power over the living and the underworld, plunging the world into a reign of terror.

I’ve read the entire Sword of Truth series! I absolutely love them and his writing as a whole! It’s beautifully written with immense descriptions, but also a captivating story line with believable and connectable characters. Richard and Kahlan are (Spoiler Alert!!!) #relationshipgoals. Zedd’s also one of my favorite characters of all time!! Seriously, he’s the best. The series encompasses so many genres with high adventure, intense action, drama, fantasy and compelling romance. It’ll keep you hooked and make you stay up all night reading! Taking real life issues and helping to solve them through the wizards rules. The first rule; “People are stupid; given proper motivation, almost anyone will believe almost anything. Because people are stupid, they will believe a lie because they want to believe it’s true, or because they are afraid it might be true.”

This was a reread for me. I have also seen the Legend of the Seeker, the TV show which is based on the series. The book is better than the show. I love fantasy books and Terry Goodkind did a masterful job of creating a world full of depth. Layer by layer you get pieces of the world without feeling overwhelmed. Richard the main character is new to the world of magic so he asks the questions the readers are thinking. There are some classic fantasy characters like wizards and dragons but we get new ones as well like Confessers and Gars. This story is long with other very long books to follow. It is daunting to start, but it is really worth it.

I read this book a few years ago and have mixed feelings about it. I do think it is well written and I like the main characters. It stretches on a little too long for me though. It has one or four too many plot twists and turns. How much can happen to one poor main character? I guess if you are truly enjoying it, you don’t mind it being long, but for me it just went a little too far for one book. One of my favorite quotes comes from this book though. One of the characters, Zedd, says “Nothing is ever easy.” That quote, said in his tone and voice, really resonated with me and I think it to myself on a regular basis. As a parent that exasperated “nothing is ever easy” feeling just stuck with me. To me that is a sign of good writing and I would say if you are in the mood for a nice loooong fantasy novel, this is the right book for you.
